Mexico offers several options for productions bringing professional equipment into the country, depending on the size and requirements of the project.

ATA Carnet

The simplest and most widely accepted method for temporarily importing professional film, television and photography equipment into Mexico is the ATA Carnet.

An ATA Carnet is an international customs document that allows equipment to be temporarily imported without paying import duties, taxes or value-added tax (VAT), provided the equipment is re-exported within the authorized period. Mexico accepts ATA Carnets at its international ports of entry, making them a practical solution for many international productions.

Small Productions

For interviews, documentaries, news gathering, photography shoots and other small productions, crews can often travel with a limited amount of professional equipment as accompanied baggage. Cameras, lenses, audio equipment, laptops, tripods and small lighting kits are commonly brought into Mexico for short-term projects.

Customs requirements may vary depending on the quantity and value of the equipment being transported, so advance planning is recommended.

Large Productions

For larger productions carrying substantial quantities of equipment, the most common options are temporary importation through a customs broker or renting equipment locally in Mexico.

Mexico has a well-developed production industry with access to cameras, lighting, grip, generators, production vehicles, drones, specialty equipment and other resources in major production hubs such as Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Depending on the project’s needs, renting locally can often reduce transportation costs, customs procedures and logistical complexity.

Production Support

Film in Mexico can assist productions with equipment logistics, ATA Carnets, customs coordination, temporary imports, local rentals and transportation, helping ensure a smooth and efficient production experience throughout Mexico.
